16:40 - 17:25 Lecture 1: Case study: Agile in non-Agile environment

  • Habte Woldu, QNH Poland
He has experience in developing and maintaining enterprise applications for multinational clients. During his professional career he took part in various stages of software development cycle, gaining experience as an analyst, architect and a team leader. In his professional life he tries to use various agile techniques to maximize project performance and achieve optimal business-IT alignment.
Currently works in QNH Poland focusing on Customer Interaction, Information Management and Enterprise Architecture.

Habte is a Certified Scrum Master and Sun Certified Enterprise Architect.

The presentation is a case study of the application of Agile methods to a project run in a strictly formalized environment. The goal of the presentation is to show common problems and pitfalls the agile team may come across as well as to prove that agile techniques can be adopted in various parts of software engineering project phases.

During his career in Accenture, Siemens, NSN and REC, Tomasz gather unique experience by participating in agile projects on nearly all available positions: team member, architect, line manager, product owner and finally enterprise product owner.
In addition to his agile experience, Tomasz spent over two years managing complex and distributed projects for largest telecommunications operators in Europe (e.g. Vodafone, OTH, Netcom).

Tomasz graduated Wroclaw University of Technology, faculty software engineering and is currently working on his PhD thesis, faculty management. At the same time, he is an agile consultant for largest Wroclaw’s companies, participates actively in PMI and SPMP (Polish Project Management Association) community, giving lectures on project management. Tomasz is also founding member of Wroclaw Agile Community.

Currently Lukasz is working for Research and Engineering Center Sp. z o.o.in Wroclaw leading project for automotive industry. In his career Lukasz had the opportunity to work for almost all software development phases on many positions – started as a developer, then through being an architect he came to leading projects and become team leader for group of developers and testers.

For his previous employer Nokia Siemens Networks Lukasz took part in introducing Agile and SCRUM methodology in big international project realizing product used for Network Management. For the years of professional career, Lukasz used to work with many project management methodologies – from traditional waterfall approach, through V-model, to SCRUM methodologies.

Graduate of Wroclaw University of Technology, faculty of Software Engineering. Certified SCRUM master.




The presentation is organized in form of agile project, where participants are customers and speakers are development team. Customers make business choices, what kind of agile information is most important for them. Presentation consists of three iterations (fixed set of features). Every iteration should delivery something valuable and ready to be used by all participants. Success or failure of the iteration is verified during demo session. Following user stories can be delivered by development team:

  • Estimation and planning
  • Retrospection
  • Distributed teams and offshoring
  • Requirements management
  • Project management method selection
  • Introduction of agile in organization
  • People management and motivation
  • Scrum in practice
  • Scrum introduction

Please note that business choice is important since only half of them can be usually done during presentation!
During the course of lecture, participants can see and execute prioritization, backlog operation, burndown chart and taskboard creation.

Nine years experience of project and program management for Business Development and Telecommunication project with proved history of over 50 successful projects.
Wide experience in program management with complex integration and geographically distributed team, typical for cooperation with major Telecom players (T-mobile, Vodafone, Orascome).

Personally interested in flexibility and balancing quality and efficiency in project management. Thus actively opting for agile methods and Agile implementation.
In parallel actively working for PMI including PMP certification.

Graduated from Wroclaw University of Technology. 2 Years of experience in testing of mobile TV solution in Siemens. For 2 years leader of Performance Laboratory for intelligent networks in Nokia Siemens Networks, responsible for final verification, tracing performance problems, life system analysis for mobile operators all over the World.

Currently employed in REC as integration and verification manager, involved into embedded systems for automotive area.

Holding many certificates, including ISEB intermediate. Experience in software verification techniques as well as team leading (line responsibility).
